After dropping a match last week, the Phoenix boys' soccer team couldn't afford another loss at home.
For the first half, the Pirates seemed to be missing that point. They trailed visiting Henley 3-1 in a Skyline Conference match at Colver Fields in Talent. Another loss could put a serious dent in hopes of winning a conference championship.
And then Phoenix woke up. The Pirates ran off four unanswered goals over 11 minutes before holding on for a 5-4 win over the Hornets.
PHS (2-1-2 overall, 2-1 Skyline) got big days from Sergio Urena and Johnny Esquivel. Esquivel set up Urena for a trio of goals, including two in a four-minute stretch early in the second half to even the score. They also combined for the team's first-half goal.
Juan Paso converted a Bryson Flenner pass for a goal shortly after before Alex Salcido headed in a corner from Jacob Jee.
The Pirates return to action Thursday, heading to Klamath Falls to take on Mazama.
