This time, the Phoenix boys’ soccer team waited just a little too long to get things in gear.
After rallying past Hidden Valley late in the first meeting between the teams last month in Murphy, the Pirates were able to dig out of a hole in a 2-1 loss to the Mustangs in a Skyline Conference match at Colver Fields on Thursday.
Andrew Hanson scored both of the Hidden Valley goals, including one with about two minutes to play that gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Phoenix responded when Sergio Urena found the goal with a minute left and had a few more frenzied opportunities at the net but was unable to tie the match.
Phoenix is 4-2 in conference play and 4-2-2 overall. The Pirates return to action Monday when they visit North Valley. Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm in Merlin.
