Earning a third straight Skyline Conference soccer championship wasn't easy for the Phoenix Pirates on Monday afternoon in Klamath Falls.
The Pirates edged Mazama 1-0, wrapping up a 9-0-1 effort in the Skyline and are conference champions for a third straight year. The championship is the 14th in 24 years for veteran coach Dennis Flenner.
Victor Martinez scored off a Johnny Esquivel pass in the 58th minute of the match to break the scoreless tie. Moises Rivera put together yet another shutout in the goal, turning in his eighth clean sheet of the year in the process. Joe Navas, Dan Martinez and Cornelio Carrera-Flores aided the defensive effort. PHS has allowed only five goals the entire season.
The Pirates (12-0-1 overall0 are idle until opening the OSAA playoffs on October 31 when they will host a match in the Round of 16.
