Valiants too much for short-handed Pirates

Without five starters, the Phoenix boys' soccer team had its work cut out for it on Saturday afternoon.

Ranked fourth in the state's pre-season poll, the Pirates were tied with visiting Valley Catholic before the Valiants scored three unanswered goals in a 4-1 non-conference final at Colver Field in Talent. Randy Rodriguez scored the lone Pirate goal, taking a pass from Ty Clayton and finding the net in the 25th minute.

Valley Catholic responded with goals in the 30th, 41st and 45th minute.

Currently ranked 10th in the state, Phoenix hosts Marshfield on Tuesday beginning at 4:30 at Colver Field.
