A rivalry that is being renewed went to Phoenix on Tuesday night as the Pirates edged host Ashland 2-1 in a non-conference soccer match.
Phoenix moved to 2-1 on the season and jumped to fourth with the win over the Grizzlies. Jorgie Mejia opened the scoring when he converted a loose ball into a goal in the 34th minute. Randy Rodriguez upped the lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Ashland (3-2 on the season) countered with a goal in the 66th minute but was unable to get any closer.
The match marked only the fourth time in the past 25 seasons that the teams have played. Plans are in the works to continue the match-up in 2020.
Phoenix returns to action on Saturday, visiting Molalla.
