A memorable run ended just short of a state title for the Phoenix boys' soccer team.
After rolling to a Skyline Conference title, the Pirates knocked off a pair of conference champions in North Marion (1-0) and Marist (3-0) before falling to Stayton 4-1 in the title game at Sutherlin Saturday night.
Phoenix finished the second 10-2.
The Pirates controlled both games leading up to the championship before a more physical Stayton team got the best of them in the finale. Victor Martinez scored the lone Phoenix goal on a second-half penalty kick.
Two nights earlier, Phoenix broke a scoreless tie with late first-half goals by Jorge Mejia and Adolfo Camacho before Martinez scored early in the second half to put away Marist. Martinez scored the lone goal in the win while Dan Martinez and Tucker Speaks anchored the stellar defensive effort for the Pirates.
