A solid defensive effort helped the Phoenix girls basketball team close 2017 with a victory.
The Pirates controlled the tempo throughout a 36-28 win at Myrtle Point on Friday afternoon. The win ended a seven-game losing streak, improving the Pirates to 2-8 on the season.
Phoenix outscored its hosts 18-7 over the second and third quaters to break open a close game. Bella Lopez led the winners with 12 points whle Taylor DeVry added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Brooke Kentner hustled her way to eight rebounds while Delani Parent blocked five shots.
The win came a night after a 46-30 loss at Douglas. The host Trojans outscored the Pirates 30-12 over the middle quarters. Parent and DeVry both had eight points for Phoenix, which visits Ashland on Tuesday night.
