The Phoenix girls' basketball team made a strong push for its first Skyline Conference win of the season, falling agonizingly close in a 44-40 loss at Klamath Union on Friday night.
In a game where 50 fouls were called and 71 free throws were shot, the Pirates led 26-24 at halftime and hung close throughout the second half. The host Pelicans outscored PHS 11-5 in the third quarter and held on the rest of the way.
Bella Lopez, who led all scorers with 19 points, hit a three-point in the final minute to cut the KU lead to four points but the Pirates were able to get no closer. Taylor DeVry added nine points and Delani Parent seven.
Phoenix (3-15 overall, 1-4 conference) returns to action Thursday, hosting Hidden Valley.
