Pair of close early setbacks for gritty Lady Pirates

They're short on numbers and don't have a lot of size but still the Phoenix girls' basketball team is giving opponents everything it wants early in the season.

YREKA 53, PHOENIX 43: At Phoenix, Alissa Alvarez knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and led Phoenix with 18 points in the non-conference loss on December 5.
Mae Woodward contributed 10 points and Anabell Deglado scored nine points before fouling out for the Pirates (1-2).
Alexes Collier connected for six 3-pointers and 27 points overall to lead Yreka (3-2), which had 10 3-pointers overall.

PHOENIX 46, ST. MARY’S 28: At Phoenix, senior Anabell Delgado dropped in 19 points with four 3-pointers to lead Phoenix to the non-conference victory on Dec. 2.
Alissa Alvarez put up 13 points while Mae Woodward added seven points for the Pirates (1-1).
Senior Maddie Ward led St. Mary's (0-2) with 11 points while freshman Taryn Vasey chipped in seven points.

NORTH VALLEY 34, PHOENIX 30: At Phoenix, host Phoenix was able to dig itself out of an early 8-0 hole but fatigue set in for the six-deep Pirates in the fourth quarter to open the door for a North Valley rally in the coaching debut with the Knights of former Ashland boys basketball coach Sam Osofsky on Nov. 30.
Alissa Alvarez paved the way for Phoenix (0-1) with 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Her driving basket allowed the Pirates to pull even at 11-all early in the second quarter, while Anabell Delgado followed with a 3-pointer a bit later to help the Pirates enter halftime ahead 16-13.
Delgado finished with six steals, while Mira Jacobs Grigsby pulled in 11 rebounds and Mae Woodward added seven boards.
Colbie Estes knocked down five 3-pointers to lead North Valley (1-0), while Lainie Wheeler and Shaylyn Godfrey each added nine points.
