The Phoenix girls’ soccer continues to knock down barriers during the 2017 season.
After equaling last season’s victory total with a pair of non-conference wins in September, the Pirates took care of even bigger business on Tuesday afternoon, downing visiting Klamath Union 2-1 in a Skyline Conference game at Colver Fields.
In addition to being the inaugural Skyline win of the season, the victory ended a league losing streak of 75 games, dating back to late in the 2009 season when PHS down Illinois Valley in a league contest. In between wins there were 73 losses and a pair of ties.
Phoenix did all of its scoring in the first half. Lupita Alegria turned a penalty kick into a goal in the 20th minute before Alex Hernandez angled a shot past the KU goalie 10 minutes later. The visiting Pelicans scored earlier in the second half but were unable to find the net again.
Phoenix improved to 1-4 in Skyline play and 3-5 overall. The Pirates return to action Thursday, visiting Hidden Valley in Murphy.
