The bar continues to raise for the Phoenix girls' soccer team.
After bringing a long Skyline Conference losing streak last season, the Pirates are looking to continue their climb up the standings. They made a big step in that direction on Thursday, rallying for a 4-2 win over Klamath Union in the conference opener for both teams.
Despite outshooting the Pelicans 8-3 over the first 40 minutes, the Pirates trailed 2-0 at halftime. The offense got untracked in the second half while the defense kept KU from finding the net again. Sandra Villa opened the scoring off a Maggie Carrillo assist early in the half. Jackie Rodriguez was next, scoring an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Carrillo headed home a pass from Lupita Alegria to give Phoenix its first lead of the game. Mackenzie Christensen finished the scoring off a pass from Carrillo at the 65-minute mark of the match.
The win improved the Pirates' overall record to 2-1-1. They return to action Monday, visiting Hidden Valley.
