Last spring, the Phoenix girls' soccer team wasn't able to keep up with the likes of Mazama.
Thursday, the Pirates nearly knocked off the host Vikings, dropping a 2-1 decision to open Skyline Conference play.
Phoenix (2-2 overall) tied the score when Sofia Rodriguez scored early in the second half. Mazama took the lead for good on a goal about 10 minutes later.
Maria Pyeatt totalled 11 saves in goal for Phoenix, which returns to action Monday at Klamath Union
