New is a good thing for the Phoenix High School volleyball team.
The Pirates debuted new uniforns, were led by a new coach and displayed a new mindset in rolling past Brookings-Harbor in a non-league match on Wednesday night at PHS, winning 25-16, 25-14 and 25-15.
Junior setter Sofia Tringolo had 11 assists, four kills and four aces to lead Phoenix.
The Pirates led nearly from wire-to-wire in the match. Phoenix trailed only briefly early in the third set before taking charge to seal the victory.
Senior outside hitter Kassidy Calhoun had 13 kills and three aces for the Pirates, who received a big boost in the middle from junior Katelyn Hansen (seven kills, one block) and senior Avery Reneau (four kills, five blocks, three aces).
The win was the first for Robin Akpan as Phoenix's coach. The Pirates were swept by Brookings in a non-conference match last season.
The Pirates return to action Thursday, hosting South Umpqua in non-league play beginning at 5 pm at 1 Pirate Place.
