It was a learning night for the Phoenix varsity volleyball team.
One night removed from a sweep of visiting Brookings, the Pirates found the sledding rougher against another Far West League foe, falling in three sets to South Umpqua, 25-17, 25-14 and 25-19.
PHS raced out to an early 8-2 lead in the opening set. The Lancers took charge from there over the rest of the first set and the second set. Phoenix had its best scoring game in the final set but was unable to grab a win from SU, which improved to 2-1 on the season.
Seven kills from Kassidy Calhoun led the Pirate offense. Avary Reneau had five aces while Sofia Tringolo totalled nine assists and three blocks. Katelyn Hanson added three kills and three blocks.
The Pirates return to action Tuesday, hosting Douglas at 1 Pirate Place.
