The Phoenix varsity volleyball team took some time to get untracked in its season debut.
After falling in three sets to visiting Marshfield, Phoenix gave South Medford all it wanted in a five-set loss to conclude the multi-meet at PHS on August 30.
The Pirates split the first four sets with South before falling 15-11 in the finale. They lost a pair of close sets against Marshfield (25-22, 27-25) before dropping a 25-13 decision in the third set.
Katelyn Hanson's 12 aces and six kills paced Phoenix against South Medford. Sophia Tringolo totalled 18 assists and six aces while Abi George finished the match with 15 digs. Anna Ellis had 12 assists and three aces in the match against Marshfield.
The Pirates return to action Tuesday, visiting Sutherlin.
