The Phoenix volleyball team continues to scratch the surface.

After dropping a pair of matches on Tuesday at home, the Pirates ventured to Coos Bay for a three-team event with Marshfield and Reedsport. After falling to Marshfield in straight sets, Phoenix won the first two sets against Reedsport before dropping the final three on Thursday night.

Phoenix rolled past Reedsport 25-16 and 25-18 in the first two sets before scoring 14, 13 and 11 points in the final three. Josie Bolstad finished with 10 kills, Delanie Parent added eight and Rae Goff totalled 28 digs. Anna Ellis set 21 assists and added 12 digs.

After falling 25-6 in the opener against Marshfield, Phoenix played better in 25-16 and 27-25 setbacks. Bolstad finished with nine kills, Goff 14 digs and Ellis 12 assists in the match.

The Pirates return to action Tuesday, hosting Sutherlin and Grants Pass beginning at 4 pm.
