An opportunity to stay in the Skyline Conference playoff chase was missed by the Phoenix volleyball team on Thursday night.
After splitting the first four sets, the Pirates found themselves leading the final set 14-8 and needed only one point to defeat visiting Mazama. The visiting Vikings managed to dominate the closing portion of the nearly two-hour match, taking a 17-15 win.
Phoenix dropped to 2-5 in Skyline play (3-14 overall) with three matches remaining. The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, hosting Klamath Union.
Josie Bolstad amassed 19 kills and 23 digs to lead Phoenix, which got a career-high 10 kills from Celeste Mackinnon. Rae Goff finished with 33 digs while Jourden Devey had 34 digs and five kills.
