A mini preview of the Skyline Conference cross country meet shaped up very well for the Phoenix Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.
The Pirates finished first among Skyline teams in both varsity races at the Henley Invitational in Klamath Falls. PHS runners grabbed two spots among the top five in both races, including a victory for Robby Vos in the boys’ event.
Vos outdueled Kyle Deiter of Lakeview, finishing in 16:38 to pace the Pirate boys to second overall (behind team champion Lakeview). Teammate Noah Marshall was fourth in 17:20, Justin Vermillion was 15th in 19:24 and Dilan Mathieu 16th in 19:42. Five of the six Skyline teams took part in the event.
The Pirate girls were the overall team champion, totaling 36 points, well ahead of Lakeview and Skyline foes Henley and Klamath Union. Lupita Alegria (22:05) placed third while Maricela Alvarado was fourth (22:21). Japser Cortell placed seventh (23:03) for the Pirates, Jasmine Christian 16th (25:04) and Vivian Tauer 18th (26:52).
PHS returns to action on Saturday at the State of Jefferson meet in Ashland.
