Cross country was the first Phoenix sport to turn in official results for the 2019 fall sports season, with impressive results.
While the rest of the school's fall teams took part in jamborees, the Pirate harriers traveled to Redding for the 13th Annual Bill Springhorn Classic on Friday. The girls placed seventh in a strong field, scoring 178 team points while the boys were 11th with 282 points.
With the majority of a team back that qualified for the OSAA State Meet in 2018, Phoenix was led by sophomore Sophia Stubblefield, who finished ninth in 19 minutes, 4.39 seconds. Freshman Kyla Potratz debuted with a 19th-place finish (20:09.76), Heidi Taylor was 55th in 22:23.36, Lucy Newell 63rd in 22:48.96 and Shelby Platt 71st in 23:28.56 to round out the scoring.
Noah Marshall paced the boys, finishing 10th in 15:58.07. Elwood Hosking was 44th in 17:22.71, Dilan Mathieu 56th in 17:41.62, Marcello Camargo 115th in 20>09.51 and Roman Stubbs 146th in 21:58.97.
The Pirates return to action Saturday when they will take part in the Rogue River Invitational.
