PHS girls, Marshall earn state spots

The Phoenix High School girls' cross country team is heading back to state. And they're taking Noah Marshall along with them.

The Pirate girls booked their return trip to the event, which will be held November 9 at Lane Community College in Eugene, with a second-place finish at the Skyline Conference meet at Valley of the Rogue State Park on October 30. Meanwhile, Marshall finished fourth in the boys' race to earn an individual spot.

Klamath Union scored 40 points to win the girls' event, eight fewer than Phoenix. However, the Pirates had the top two finishers in the race at sophomore Sophia Stubblefield paced all runners, finishing in 19:21.60 while teammate Kyla Potratz was second. The freshman posted a time of 19:27.17.

Other Pirate finishers contributing to the point total included Sienna Bauer 12th in 22:04.36, Heidi Taylor 16th in 22:52.39 and Lucy Newell 17th in 23:12.63. Shelby Platt was 20th in 23:27.91 and Jasper Cortell 27th in 25:23.99.

Meanwhile, Marshall was a solid fourth to earn his first trip to state, posting a time of 17:06.36. Also for PHS, Elwood Hosking was eighth in 17:28.60, Dilan Mathieu 14th in 18:13.38, Marcelo Camargo-Berry 22nd in 18:46.68, Blake Breitler 36th in 21:03.58 and Adriel Gamez 3th in 21:24.38.

The top 14 finishers in each race earned all-Skyline honors.

Klamath Union also won the boys' race. Phoenix was fourth with 84 points.
