Elwood Hosking and Sophia Stubblefield closed their careers in style.

The Phoenix seniors brought home 4A titles from the OSAA State Track and Field Championships in Eugene on May 20-21.

Hosking staged an epic battle with Marshfield's Alexander Garcia-Silver in Friday's 3000, taking the lead late in the race and holding on for a win in 8:34.56, a personal best. He bounced back a day later to win the 800, edging Henry Tierney of Valley Catholic by less than a half of a second. Hosking finished in 1:54.23.

Meanwhile, Stubblefield claimed her title just before Hosking on Friday. She chased down La Grande's Emily Tubbs, who set a blistering pace in the early going. Stubblefield finished in 10;31.00, almost two seconds faster than Tubbs. Phoenix junior Kyla Potratz was third in the 3000 in 10:39.44.

Stubblefield and Potratz were back at it on Saturday, taking part in the 1500. Stubblefield finished third (4:50.86) while Potratz was seventh (4:58.22).

Hosking, Stubblefield and Potratz were joined by five other Pirates at the State meet. Senior Zyan Shull-Bain finished seventh in the shot put and ninth in the discus. Classmates Alan Cortez and Mady Meyer were both ninth in the long jump while freshman Diego Hernandez was 10th in the triple jump. Laurelin Jansen, also a freshman, qualified in the pole vault but did not make an opening height at State.
