The Phoenix High School track and field teams are on the rise.
Boasting their largest rosters in several seasons, the Pirates have impressed in a variety of events through the early part of the competition season. The build-up to the Skyline Conference meet (scheduled for May 19-20 at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls) is currently underway.
Middle and long distances plus hurdles are PHS strengths on the track. Senior Kyla Potratz returns after winning a state cross country title in the fall. Classmate Citlali Ramos leads the team's female middle distance runners.
For the boys, junior Kael Feeley and freshman Nathen Hammond headline the distance crew while juniors Orlando Contreras and Nathan Faulkner and freshman Ethan Dobbins lead the pack in the shorter distances.
Senior Jackson Selden is among the top hurdlers in the conference among boys while junior Brisa Bauer leads the female hurdlers.
On the field, senior Alex Prescott is off to an impressive start in the jumps, classmate Morgan Miles is the top javelin throwers among PHS girls while Cash Stallsworth is pacing the Pirate boys in the throws. Senior Jair Ramirez is solid in the javelin while the duo of Dobbins and sophomore Brayden Decker are both moving near six feet in the high jump. Sophomores Laurelin Jansen (pole vault) and Diego Hernandez (triple jump) are returning state qualifiers in their respective events.
