XC teams open in Redding heat

The Phoenix cross country teams are accustomed to running in the heat. And the Pirates didn't let a little warmth bother them when they opened the season in Redding on August 31.
The PHS girls finished 6th and the boys 13th in the Springhorn Classic at Shasta Community College. Phoenix totaled 189 points as a team in the girls' event and 302 in the boys' race.
Lupita Alegria finished 23rd (19 minutes, 38 seconds) and Sophia Stubblefield 30th (20:28) to pace the girls. Noah Marshall toured the course in 16:23, good for 17th place in the boys' race. Dilan Mathieu was 47th (17:45).
It will be considerably cooler when the Pirates return to action Saturday at the Brookings-Harbor Invitational.
