PHS girls are heading to State

With a mix of veterans and newcomers, the Phoenix girls' cross country team earned a trip to the OSAA State Meet in Eugene next weekend.
The Pirates finished second as a team at the Skyline District meet in Klamath Falls on Wednesday to punch their collective ticket to the OSAA event at Lane Community College on November 3. PHS totaled 38 points, trailing only Henley (31 points) in the team competition.
Senior Lupita Alegria was the first Pirate finisher, touring the hilly terrain at Steen Sports Park in 22 minutes. 4.54 seconds. Freshman Sophia Stubblefield was right behind, placing fourth in 22:19.17.
All seven Pirate runners finishers among the top 18. Freshman Scarlet Moit was eighth in 24:02.52, sophomore Shelby Platt 10th in 24:36.08, freshman Heidi Taylor 15th in 24:38.45, junior Jasper Cortell 17th in 25:29.53 and freshman Lucy Newell 18th in 25:49.27.
The Phoenix boys tied for fourth as a team with 96 points but were only eight points out of second and a spot at state. Noah Marshall (10th in 18:50.43), Yoavanni Bazan-Chavez (12th in 18:56.34), Dillan Mathieu (21st in 20:02.50), Justin Vermillion (23rd in 20:06.38) and Elwood Hosking (30th in 20:52.34) were the top five Pirate finishers.
