Solid spring break poises Pirates for Skyline season
8.0 months ago | Dave Ehrhardt
Pirate Win: 8 - 2

After a slow start, the baseball season is looking up for the Phoenix Pirates.

The Pirates posted a 2-2 mark over spring break and are starting to find consistency on both offense and defense as they enter the start of Skyline Conference play with an overall mark of 4-5. Phoenix hosts Henley in a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday, April 6 at Colver Field.

The development of pitching depth has been big factor for the Pirates. Senior Karver Wolowicz is the team’s top hurler. Junior Kaden Sousa, sophomore Chris Phillips and freshman Sam Shilts have all started logging more innings on the mound and keeping Phoenix in games when Wolowicz isn’t pitching.

Senior Jackson Shilts is handling the pitching staff behind the plate while classmate Ryan Watts started at shortstop.

Phoenix has also perked up offensively, averaging seven runs per game over the past four games. Sousa had a three-hit game in an 8-2 win against Cottage Grove while sophomore Luke Jennings collected a pair of hits in a 5-4 loss to Marshfield. Both games were played at Hidden Valley’s spring break tournament.
