Pirate Lose: 0 - 48
The road and quality opponents continue to make for a rough start to the season for the Phoenix football team.
The Pirates dropped a 48-0 decision to host Coquille on September 9. Phoenix is 0-2 on the young season and will visit St. Mary's on Friday night. Game time is 7 pm at Lithia and Driveway Fields in Medford.
It appeared the Pirates would compete early at Coquille as they moved the ball throughout the first quarter. Jackson Selden led the early surge, finishing with six first-half catches for 115 yards.
The defending 2A state champion Red Devils got moving as the half progressed, turning a scoreless tie into a 34-0 halftime lead. Coquille did most of its damage on the ground.
While the Phoenix passing game was slowed in the second half, Kody Martin provided some definite highlights. The freshmen running back finished the night with 70 yards, including a pair of runs when he bounced off would-be tacklers for long gains.

Pirate Lose: 6 - 50
Season-openers don't get any tougher than this.
The Phoenix football team opened the 2022 season with a true test, taking on last year's 3A state runner-up and Far West League champion South Umpqua. Originally scheduled to be played at home, the game was moved to Myrtle Creek due to air quality issues.
When the smoke cleared, the visiting Pirates found the going tough, falling behind 35-0 after the first quarter in an eventual 50-6 loss to the Lancers.
South Umpqua scored on seven of its first nine possessions in running and throwing its way past the Pirates.
While the scoreboard wasn't favorable, PHS had some highlights. Penalties were few (only three in the game) several players turned in solid performances. Jackson Shiltz ran for 68 yards on eight carries, Jackson Selden caught three passes for 55 yards, including a 40-yard scoring pass from Hunter Everhart for the team's touchdown in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Sidney McQueen and Hayden HIcks both recovered South Umpqua fumbles.
The Pirates return to action on Friday, visiting Coqulle.
