Skyline title, State trip for Pirates

Pirate Lose: -
  The Phoenix boys' cross country team is heading to State! Led by senior Kael Feeley, the Pirates outran Hidden Valley and Klamath Union to earn Skyline honors. PHS finished with 42 points, 12 fewer than runner-up Hidden Valley. Feeley covered the course in 17 minutes. 21.16 seconds, finishing second to Samuel Iversen of Henley. Teammate Ethan Dobbins was fifth, Orlando Contereras sixth, AJ Merlina ninth and Angel Ramirez-Rojas 20th to round out the Pirate scoring. Phoenix will compete in the 4A State Championships at Lane Community College in Eugene on Nov. 4. The Pirate girls finished third with 70 points. Aleah Polansky led Phoenix, finishing ninth. In a final tune-up for the Skyline Conference meet, the Phoenix boys finished 10th and the girls 15th in strong field at the annual Umpqua Invite in Roseburg on October 18. Senior Kael Feeley set the pace for the boys, finishing 11th overall in 16:40.80. The boys compiled 277 team points. Meanwhile, freshman Aleah Polansky led the girls, posting a time of 22:22.30 for 51st place. The girls finished with 388 points. The Pirates return to action when they will compete for the Skyline Championship on October 25 in Klamath Falls. Kael Feeley closed his cross country career at Phoenix High School by finishing an impressive third in the OSAA 4A State Cross Country Championships on November 4 in Eugene. A senior, Feeley posted a time of 16 minutes, 47.6 seconds on a soggy and slippery day at Lane Community College.  His finish fueled the Pirates to an eighth-place team finish. Phoenix had 193 points, just one point away from seventh. Newport won the team title with 49 points. Other Pirate finishes contributing toward the team score included Ethan Dobbins in 33rd, Orlando Contreras 35th, Adrian Merlina 65th and Lincoln Potorchnick 79th.  For complete results visit https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/226731/results/905025

The Phoenix cross country teams have definitely been on the run lately. As they prepare for the Skyline District meet in October, the Pirates have been competiting at least twice per week through the early stages of the season. That included a trip to the Eugene area for the Veneta Country Fair and a rare home meet when they took part in the Rogue XC at Colver Field. Complete results from both meets are below. Pirate boys win at Myrtle Point

The Phoenix boys' cross country team meant business on Saturday morning. Running at a meet in Myrtle Point, the Pirates put together a dominant performance with 11 runners finishing among the top 20 in the four-team meet. Phoenix totalled just 23 team points, 32 less than runner-up North Bend. Kael Feeley (17:10), Ethan Dobbins (18:11) and Orlando Contreras (18:21) cruised to the top three individual sports. Adrian Merlina, Amaru Williams and Lincoln Potochnick rounded out the top six finishers for Phoenix. The Pirate girls were second among three teams, totalling 40 teams points. North Bend won the event with 17 points. Aleah Polansky was the top Phoenix finishers, placing fifth in 22:48. The Pirates return to action Thursday when they travel to the Veneta Country Fair event in Lane County. Strong run for PHS boys to open season

The Phoenix boys' cross country team launched what is expected to be a memorable season at the Bill Springhorn Classic in Redding, CA on September 1. Among the favorites to win the Skyline Conference, the Pirate boys placed fifth in an 11-team field at the annual event in California. PHS finished with 148 team points. Crater won the meet with 29 points. Senior Kael Feeley led the way for Phoenix, placing ninth in 17:01.30. Orlando Contreras was the other Pirate to turn in a top-30 finish, placing 29th in 18:05.60 In the girls' varsity division, Phoenix was seventh with 188 team points. Crater was also the team champion in the girls' event. Freshman Aleah Polansky was 49th (23:55.50) and senior Ava Robinson 51st (23:58.10) to lead the Pirates.
