The Phoenix boys' soccer team isn't afraid to get physical this season.

After finishing second in the state 4A tournament last spring, the Pirates are 2-0 on the fall season after wins over Cottage Grove and North Medford to open the season.

Phoenix downed North Medford 5-3 on September 13 in an intense match at Phoenix-Talent Rising Field. The Pirates took a 3-1 lead on goals by Jenner Selden, Caden Gallegos and Victor Martinez before North rallied with a pair of second-half goals to forge a 3-3 tie. Martinez took things into his own hands, completing the hat trick with two more goals.

Selden scored off a rebounded shot (28th minute) to tie the game at 1-1 before Gallegos found the top left shelf in the 32nd minute. Martinez converted a free kick in the first minute of the second half before Ulysses Gomez scored twice in a minute for the Black Tornado.

Martinez made an impressive run to the goal and scored in the 64th minute before finding the net a final time 10 minutes later.

The Pirates return to action Wednesday at Marshfield before hosting Ontario on Saturday.
