The Phoenix boys' soccer team faced more than a few challenges last week, coming through all of them with flying colors!

The Pirates are 4-0 on the young season after scoring three victories in a five-day stretch. The latest was a 5-0 romp past visiting Ontario in a battle of two of the state's best 4A teams.

After edging Marshfield 3-2 on the road last Wednesday, Phoenix returned home to host an Ontario team that made the long trip west. The Tigers played a game at South Medford on Friday night before making their way to P-T Rising Field on Saturday morning for a match-up with the Pirates, who finished second in the 4A State Showcase last spring.

Phoenix looked every bit as good again, getting a pair of goals from Jorge Mejia and single scores from Bryan Ramos, Caden Gallegos and Victor Martinez. Martinez added a pair of assists while Johnny Reyes, Mejia and Gallegos also set up teammates for goals.

Danny Palomino and Cielo Marlia-Larsen joined goalie Tucker Speaks to anchor the defensive shutout. The Pirates return to action Thursday when they open Skyline Conference play by hosting Mazama. Kickoff is set for 6 pm at P-T Rising.
