At least two Phoenix High School runners earned a spot in the upcoming OSAA State Championships. Others continue to wait! Kyla Potratz repeated as the individual girls' champion at the Skyline Conference Championships on October 27 in Rogue River. The senior cruised to another title, posting season-best time of 19 minutes. 17.9 seconds, over a minute better than runner-up finisher Isa Coffman of Klamath Union. Meanwhile, freshman Nathen Hammond placed seventh in the boys' race, also earning an individual spot in the State Meet, which will be held on November 5 at Lane Community College in Eugene. Hammond finished in 17:57.1, grabbing the final individual spot as the top seven finishers automatically qualify. Teammate Kael Feeley was just behind in eight, posting a time of 17:57.1. Both Phoenix teams finished third in the standings. The boys were just one point behind second-place Klamath Union and could qualify as wild card for the team race in Eugene. Potratz took the lead early and never relinquished it to earn another trip to State. She finished third in last year's state meet. Freshman Herminia Corona was just outside the top seven, placing eighth in 21:46.1. Brisa Bauer was 16th (23:51.8) and Ava Robinson 17th in 23:53.4. The girls totalled 62 team point, 15 out of second place. For the boys, Orlando Contreras added a 10th-place finish (18:05.9). A statewide committee will select the wild card team on Saturday night.

Pirates old and new were impressive to open the cross country season. Phoenix took part in the Springhorn Classic in Redding on Sept. 2. Other than dodging smoke from the Weed, CA fire on the way home, PHS turned in solid performances to start the season. The boys finished seventh out of 15 teams as a team with 224 points. Junior Kael Feeley led the way, finishing 30th in 18:20.69. Freshmen Nathan Hammond was close behind, placing 31st in 18:23.53. Also for Phoenix, Ethan Dobbins was 70th in 20L25.28, Marcelo Camargo 80th in 20:49.36 and Javier Quintana 93rd in 21:12.15. The Phoenix girls were sixth out of eight teams with 150 points. Senior Kyla Potratz posted a 13th-place finish in 20:43.57. Joanna Siordia (58th in 25:30.36), Ava Robinson (60th in 25:57.05), Brisa Bauer (27:30.48) and Agatha Hosking (84th in 35:10.0) rounded out the PHS contingent. Phoenix returns to action on Sept. 14 when it will take part in the Skyline Pre-District Meet in Rogue River.
