A year ago, the Phoenix girls' soccer team wasn't ready to deal with larger schools.
Tuesday night, the Pirates proved how far they've progressed in a 1-1 tie against 5A Crater in Central Point.
Phoenix (1-0-1 on the season) trailed 1-0 when Sandra Villa scored on an assist by Alex Hernandez in the 62nd minute. Both teams threatened in the final 18 minutes but were unable to break the tie.
The Pirates dropped a 5-0 decision to Crater last year. Ranked 10th in the state, Phoenix returns to action Thursday, hosting Cottage Grove.
