4 Pirates on to State track

A quartet of underclassmen from Phoenix will represent the Pirates at the 4A State Track and Field Meet in Florence this weekend.
Kyla Potratz, Sophia Stubblefield, Elwood Hosking and Fa Masolosalo qualified at the Skyline Track and Field Meet in Klamath Falls.
Potratz and Stubblefield earned the meet's top female distance runner award after taking 1-2 in the 1500 and 3000-meter runs. Stubblefield won the 3000 on Friday, edging Potratz by .20 of a second before Potratz took honors over Stubblefield in the 1500 on Saturday by .44 of a second.
Hosking used a late surge to take honors in the 1500 on Saturday afternoon. The junior finished in 4:09.87, edging Patrick Clayburn of North Valley in the race's final meters.
Masalosalo finished second in the discus to earn his spot at state, tossing a best of 125-9. He finished third in the shot put, missing a state spot by just over six inches.
Potratz is a sophomore while the other three are juniors.
The state event will be held at Siuslaw High School in Florence.

A pair of Phoenix runners brought home second-place finishes from the 4A State Track and Field Championships in Florence on May 21 and 22.
Sophomore Kyla Potratz was second in the 3000-meter run while junior Elwood Hosking placed second in the 1500. Potratz turned in a time of 10:40.38 for her runner-up finish while Hosking ran a 4:07.05 in the 1500. Both times were personal records for the Pirates.
Potratz followed up with a fourth-place finish in the 1500, turning in a time of 5:04.48. Both of her races were won by Junction City senior Anika Thompson.
Also for Phoenix, Sophia Stubblefield finished ninth in the 3000 (11:07.28) while Fa Masalosalo came up short of qualifying for the finals in the shot put and discus. Like Hosking, Stubblefield and Masalosalo are both juniors.
Skyline Conference member Hidden Valley won team titles for both the boys and the girls.
White, Bauer turn in top track results

Payton White swept the short sprints for the Phoenix boys and Brisa Bauer scored a pair of wins for the girls team but Henley proved too much with sweeping wins in the dual meet.
White won the 100 in 11.84 seconds and 200 in 24.61, with teammate Elwood Hosking placing first in the 1,500 (4:15.37).
Bauer finished first in the 100 hurdles (17.96) and high jump (4-6), and the freshman’s runner-up mark of 30-5 3/4 in the triple jump was the third-best mark in school history.
Kyla Potratz set a PR in winning the 1,500 (5:16.54) for Phoenix, while Jane Johnson took first in the 400 (1:09.20).

The Phoenix track and field teams produced some impressive results in a pair of home meets.
The Pirates hosted Klamath Union in a Skyline Conference dual on April 27. Jane Johnson and Kyla Potratz were double winners for the Phoenix girls while Fa Masalosalo won the shot put and discus for the Phoenix boys. On May 1 several Phoenix distance runners took part in an invitational on their home track, participating in the Phillips-Klimek event. The meet was named for a pair of distinguished PHS track and field alumni, Marci Klimek and Amanda Phillips. Kyla Potratz finished fourth in a strong girls' 3000-meter field to lead the Pirates while Elwood Hosking had the best boys' finish (11th) in the loaded 3000-meter boys' field. Noah Marshall was eighth in the 800 while Fatima Flores was 11th in the 800 for the Phoenix girls.

Pirates tangle with St. Mary's in track

A long list of Phoenix track and field athletes had excellent showings in a dual meet with St. Mary's on Friday, April 23.
The meet opened with throwing events at St. Mary's before transitioning to Phoenix for the remainder of the event. The meet was the first one held in the newly refurbished facility at PHS.
The Pirate girls won four field events to highlight their effort. Meanwhile, the PHS took five running events and four in the field. Here's a link to complete meet results:

Phoenix returns to action Tuesday, hosting Klamath Union in a Skyline Conference dual meet beginning at 4:30 pm.
Pirates open track season with solid showing

After an impressive cross country season, the Phoenix track team was strong on the pavement to open its campaign on Wednesday.
The Pirate boys won all three distance races (Noah Marshall the 800, Elwood Hosking the 1500 and Dilan Mathieu the 3000) to highlight a second-place team finish at Hidden Valley. Other winners for the PHS boys included Jair Ramirez in the 300 hurdles and Fa Masalosalo in the shot put and discus. Peyton White was second in the 200 while Zyan Shull-Bain was runner-up in the discus and third in the shot put.
Sophomore Kyla Potratz led the Phoenix girls, winning the 800-meter run. Freshman Jane Johnson was second in the 400 while classmate Brisa Bauer was second inthe 100 hurdles.
The Pirates return to action Friday when they'll take on St. Mary's in a dual meet.
