Phoenix student-athletes were among those honored in All-Skyline Conference awards for baseball and softball. Pirate softball had a pair of first-team honorees as Jayden Vos (infielder) and Kendall Heywood (utility) were selected. Both are seniors, helping the Pirates to a third-place finish in the Skyline and an overall record of 11-12 on the season. A trio that will return next season earned second-team honors, including sophomore infielders Kellie Woodside and Destiny Christlieb and junior outfielder Carsyn Gallegos. Sophomore Rylie Johnson was an honorable mention choice as an infielder. In baseball, seniors Karver Wolowicz and Ryan Watts (both infielders) and outfielder Jackson Shilts were all named to the second team. A quartet of basketball players from Phoenix High School were named to all-Skyline Conference first teams for their efforts during the 2024 season. Two boys and two girls were recognized. Seniors Robin Trenbeath and Dylan Harper represented the PHS boys while senior Anabell Delgado and junior Alissa Alvarez were honored on the girls' side. Trenbeath and Harper combined to lead PHS to a second-place finish in the conference and a spot in the OSAA state playoffs at the 4A level. Meanwhile, Delgado and Alvarez helped their team finish third in the Skyline and a Class 4A play-in berth. All four players were among team leaders in most statistical categories. Phoenix High School fall sports athletes earned numerous honors during the 2023 fall season. Voted on by conference coaches, the honors were especially plentiful for members of the Pirate junior class during the fall. In volleyball, junior Seneca Ikemire was a first-team all-Skyline Conference choice. Despite her season being cut short by a leg injury, Ikemire was the Pirates top attacker on a regular basis. Freshman Lilly Quintero earned was a second-team choice while Isha Van Ness, also a junior, was an honorable mention choice. Classmate Ariah Potts was an all-defensive team selection. In girls' soccer, junior Anahi Villa was selected to the first team after leading the Pirates in scoring. Senior Aspyn Shull-Bain, juniors Carsyn Gallegos and Katie Monroe and sophomore Addie McConnell all earned honorable mention. Practices for the Phoenix-Talent Youth Wrestling Club will began on Monday, October 23 at Phoenix High School. Practice times are 6-7:30 pm. and will be held at least twice per week. The club is open to students currently in grades 2-8 in the Phoenix-Talent School District. Participants will take part in weekend tournaments around the area starting in November. The return of heavy smoke to the Rogue Valley led to the cancelation of Friday's annual Phoenix Soccer Jamboree. Air levels were well over the limit of 150 to play a high school event in Oregon. A total of 27 teams were slated to compete at Lithia and Driveway Fields in Medford at the event. There is no make-up date. Meanwhile, the Phoenix Football Jamboree has been moved to Modoc Field in Klamath Falls where there is better air quality. Action will start at 5 pm and include the Pirates plus St. Mary's and host Klamath Union.

The start of the fall sports season is quickly approaching for Phoenix High School. All PHS programs have put in extensive work over the summer to prepare for the season, which officially gets underway on Monday, August 14. Phoenix High School graduate and soccer standout Victor Martinez (class of 2022) died from colon cancer on June 23, 2023. “Vic” lit up every room he entered with his infectious smile and outgoing personality. He was a leader at Phoenix High both in the hallways and on the soccer field, where he scored more goals than any PHS Pirate in history and twice earned the Skyline Player of the Year award. At the 2022 Senior Awards Night at PHS, Vic was named the winner of the school’s Distinguished Athlete Award, presented by a representative of the Marine Corps to the student-athlete who displays courage, self-confidence and leadership. He certainly possessed those qualities and many more. His ability to inspire those around him went far beyond athletics. He pumped up classmates during PHS pep assemblies, pitched in to help those in need following the Almeda fire and was the loudest student volunteer at Phoenix Elementary’s 2022 field day, where his playfuln

The Phoenix varsity baseball and softball teams both earned post-season opportunities. Both Pirate teams will compete on Saturday, May 20, making considerable trips in their quest to earn a spot in the OSAA State Tournament. Baseball visits Stayton High School while softball heads to the eastern reaches of the state and will match up with Ontario. The PHS baseball team takes a 10-12 record to the game at Stayton. The Pirates are ranked 23rd in the state after a late-season reversal of fortunes which saw them pick up three forfeit wins after Skyline Conference member Mazama had to vacate all but one of its victories on the season for using an ineligible player. Phoenix solidified its spot in the rankings with a 3-2 win at Hidden Valley on May 13. Meanwhile, Stayton is ranked ninth int he state and is 15-8 overall. 12 Pirates heading to State Track & Field Championships
CoEd ALL TrackThe Phoenix Pirates are sending a dozen athletes to the OSAA State Track and Field Championships in Eugene. The annual event will take place on May 17-18 at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus. Phoenix will certainly be well-represented after a strong performance at the Skyline Conference Championships May 10-11 at Jack Woodward Stadium. Several athletes will take part in multiple events at State. Sophomore Cody Martin was recognized as the top sprinter at the conference meet after qualifying for State in four events. Martin won the 100-meter dash, finished third in the 200 (earning a spot based on his finish time) and was part of pair of relay teams that earned State spots (4x100 and 4x400). Senior Kael Feeley was named the meet's top distance runner after doubling up with victories in the 3000 on Friday before coming back Saturday to claim honors in the 1500. CoEd ALL TrackBrayden Decker continues to pick up where he left off last year. After a stellar sophomore season saw him win the Skyline Conference high jump and place at the OSAA State Track and Field Championships, the Phoenix junior tied the long-standing school record with a best of 6-foot-5 to win the event in a multi-team meet at P-T Rising Field on Tuesday. Decker's best tied a 1989 PHS mark set by Brice Sutliff. Sophomore Elijah Palmer continued his strong run in the javelin, winning the event with a best of 142-9. Phoenix finished second as a team to HIdden Valley. The Pirate boys also got a win from the 4x400 relay team of River Delco, Cole Clayton, Jackson Engstrom and Jayden Moody. The PHS girls, who also finished second as a team, got wins from Etta Allen int he discus and Laurelin Jansen in the pole vault. Jansen tied a school record in the process, clearing 8-6. Girls Varsity SoftballThe Phoenix softball team is getting things rolling at the right time of the season. The Pirates improved to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Skyline Conference with a 19-7 win over visiting Mazama on Tuesday afternoon. Keelie Woodside picked up the win while Kendall Heywood homered among her three hits and drove in four runs. The game was tied at 5-5 before PHS pulled away. Woodside shares pitching duties with senior Jayden Vos and sophomore Destiny Christlieb. When not on the mound, Christlieb and Woodside both work at third base while Vos is a four-year starter at shortstop. Sophomore Riley Johnson plays second base or shortstop while Heywood plays primarily first base but can also pitch. Senior Addie Brite catches while junior Alivia Kruse also logging time at catcher. Appearing in the 4A Round of 16 for the first time since 2020, the Pirates were outscored 35-8 over the second and third quarters in a 59-30 loss to the Spartans in Eugene on March 1. The Pirates put up a huge effort in a 53-44 loss to Baker in Baker City in a 4A play-in game on Feb. 24. Last year's 4A state champions, the host Bulldogs rolled out to a 16-5 lead after one quarter. Rather than back down, Phoenix countered with a 20-point second quarter and trailed 26-25 at halftime. CoEd ALL WrestlingA small but mighty contingent from Phoenix proved it belonged at the OSAA State Wrestling Tournament. Phoenix coach Joe Hutchinson saw Tanner Schuh (113 pounds) and Erik Reyes Medina (132) draw two of the tougher match-ups in their respective divisions at Memorial Coliseum. Boys Varsity BasketballThe Phoenix boys continued a memorable basketball season, narrowly missing out on a share of the Skyline Conference basketball championship in the process. The Pirates dropped a 53-51 decision at Henley on Feb. 20, completing the conference season in the process. Henley won the conference with a 7-1 mark while PHS finished 5-3 in Skyline play. Despite the loss, Phoenix's season continues as the Pirates (16-6 overall) will visit Marist in an 4A OSAA State Playoff Game on March 1 in Eugene. Phoenix battled throughout the conference finale in Klamath Falls, rallying in the fourth quarter after leading 29-26 at halftime. CoEd ALL SwimmingThe Phoenix Pirates made a serious splash at the OSAA State Swim Meet in Tualatin over the weekend. Phoenix finished 10th in the 1A-4A boys' team standings as the Pirates placed in three events during Saturday's finals. All PHS swimmers who helped earn points in the meet will return next season. Freshman Quin Davis led the way. He joined River Delco, Cody Martin and Makaio Potts on the 200 freestyle relay team that finished fourth while placing fifth in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle. Delco and Potts also qualified for the meet in individual events. Delco was seventh in both the 50 (23.89) and 100 (53.18), just missing a spot in the finals. Potts was eight in the 100 butterlfy (59.97) and 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.34). Both are juniors. Boys Varsity BasketballThe Phoenix boys' basketball team has figured out how to win close games. The Pirates continued their memorable season, edging rival Hidden Valley 51-48 on February 13. The victory improved PHS to 5-2 in the Skyline Conference, ensuring at least a second-place finish for Coach Troy McNichols' team. Phoenix (16-5 overall) can earn a share of the conference title with a win at Henley on Tuesday to close the regular season. Unlike earlier in the season when it had to rally past Hidden Valley, Phoenix led from the outset, building a 29-21 halftime advantage. The Pirates blazed out to a 30-0 lead and held a 48-5 advantage at halftime. The win improved Phoenix to 13-9 overall and 4-3 in the Skyline Conference, which will earn the Pirates a Class 4A play-in opportunity on February 23 or 24. Phoenix qualified swimmers in six individual events and a pair of relays at the OSAA Special District 2 meet in North Bend over the weekend. The season will continue at the OSAA State Swimming Meet in Tualatin on Friday and Saturday. Freshman Quin Davis leads the way after winning both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events in North Bend. Davis won the 200 on 1:52.90 before setting the pace in the 500 in 5:11.40. For the state meet, Davis will be seeded fourth in the 500 and sixth in the 200. Juniors River Delco and Makaio Potts are also state-bound in a pair of individual events. CoEd ALL WrestlingA pair of Phoenix wrestlers are heading to the OSAA State Tournament. Tanner Schuh and Erik Reyes-Medina earned the opportunity at the OSAA Special District 3 tournament at Marshfield Field High School in Coos Bay on Saturday. Schuh used a pair of pins to cruise into the 113-pound finals. There he wrestled a back-and-forth match against Hadyn Widdicombe of Marshfield. Schuh was on the verge of pinning Widdicombe before the Marshfield sophomore turned the tables and picked up a pin in the third period. Meanwhile, Reyes-Medina used a technical fall and a pin to earn his way to the 132-pound semifinals where he came out on the short end of an 11-2 decision. He bounced back to scored a pin over Patrick Ainsworth of Hidden Valley in the third-place match. Freshmen Weston Miles and Arturo Carrillo added fifth-place finishes for the Pirates. Girls Varsity BasketballA rough night of shooting led to a rough night for the Phoenix girls’ basketball team in a 54-28 loss at Klamath Union on Friday. The Pirates hit seven of 33 field goals attempts in a 54-28 Skyline Conference loss at Klamath Union. The loss dropped Phoenix to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in the Skyline. Despite the setback, PHS can wrap up third place in the conference on Tuesday when it hosts Hidden Valley. Mae Woodward scored 11 points and Anabell Delgado added 10 for Phoenix in the loss. CoEd ALL SwimmingThe Phoenix swimming teams continue to get a taste of what the upcoming OSAA District Meet will look like. The Pirates took part in a three-school meet at Echo Hollow Pool in Eugene on January 26. The boys finished second to host Marist while the girls were third as Hidden Valley took team honors. PHS was second to Marist in the combined scoring. With the district meet coming up on February 9-10, Phoenix received strong performances from the usual band of Pirates. Juniors Makaio Potts and River Delco both won a pair of individual events (Potts the 100 butterfly in 1:04.19 and the 100 backstroke in 1:08.57 and Delco the 50 freestyle in 24.90 and the 100 breaststroke in 1;11.39) for the Phoenix boys, who got a win from freshman Quin Davis in the 200 freestyle (1:56.01). Davis added a second in the 500 freestyle (5:27.51). Boys Varsity BasketballA big night of three-point shooting spurred a serious comeback for the Phoenix boys' basketball team on January 26. The visiting Pirates trailed host Hidden Valley by seven points in the third quarter before rallying for a thrilling 59-57 Skyline Conference win in Murphy. Phoenix improved to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline as it heads into a showdown with rival Henley on Friday night at PHS. The Pirates are currently ranked ninth in the state. Sophomore Amaru Williams was the catalyst behind the three-point barrage, knocking down six long-range baskets, including five in the second half. Vinnie Ponce and Dylan Harper added two three-point baskets apiece as Phoenix utilized a strong dribble penetration game to open up the perimeter opportunities. Harper and classmate Robin Trenbeath were the main instigators in the offensive attack. Harper finished with 14 points and Trenbeath 13, both setting up Williams in the victory. Alissa Alvarez finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals while classmate Mae Woodward totallled 14 points and 14 rebounds in a 52-38 win at Hidden Valley on January 26. Woodward keyed a 28-15 scoring advantage in the first half when she scored 12 of her points. Alvarez heated up over the final two quarters as the Pirates improved to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the Skyline. Annbell Delgado added 11 points and Lilliana Quintero nine for the Pirates, who host conference leader Henley on Friday night.
