Sweep of KU completes softball season

Pirate Win: 22 - 2
While it won’t be advancing to the post-season, Phoenix closed its best softball season since 2015 with a pair of resounding wins on Saturday. The Pirates swept visiting Klamath Union, topping the Pelicans 21-3 and 22-2 in Skyline Conference play at Colver Fields. PHS finished the season 9-13 overall, including a 5-10 mark in the conference. Phoenix won a combined 11 games in the previous two seasons. Abi George collected seven hits, including a three-run inside-the-park homer in the first game. Brooke Kentner and Tatum Truex both totalled three hits in the opener while Halie Bowman hit a three-run homer. In the second game, Josie Bolstad led the hit parade with four hits, three runs and four RBI while George, Taylor Wallack and Makenna Page also had four hits. The Pirates also rolled on Wednesday, downing the Pelicans 12-2. Kentner had another big day at the plate, homering and finishing with two of the team’s 15 hits. Katelyn Hanson and Bowman had three hits apiece as did George. Emma Truex struck out six to earn the victory.

Pirate Lose: 4 - 5
After a dramatic finish to win the opener, the Phoenix softball team had to settle for a split of a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Hidden Valley on Saturday. PHS rallied with four runs in the seventh inning to down the host Mustangs 8-7 in the opener. Halie Bowman homered among her three  hits and drove in three runs. Claire Mathewson was the winning pitcher as PHS notched its second conference win of the season. Hidden Valley avenged the loss with a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Brooke Kentner homered twice for Phoenix, which got two hits from Katelyn Hanson. Phoenix is 2-10 in conference play and 6-13 overall heading into a three-game series with Klamath Union to close the season.  
Rally falls short for Pirates

Pirate Lose: 9 - 11
Seven runs over the final three innings weren't enough to complete a rally for the Phoenix softball team on Wednesday afternoon. The Pirates nearly made up all of nine-run deficit but eventually fell to Hidden Valley 11-9 in a Skyline Confernce softball game in Talent. PHS put three runs on the board in the fifth and four more in the seventh before the Mustangs extinguished the rally. Phoenix fell to 1-9 in conference play and 5-11 overall.  Brooke Kentner staked the Pirates to a 2-1 lead with a first-inning home run. The senior outfielder later added a bases-clearing triple, driving in three more runs. She collected three hits on the day. Makenna Page also had three hits while Claire Mathewson and Josie Bolstad added two apiece. The series resumes Saturday with a doubleheader in Murphy.

Pirate Lose: 7 - 19
A pair of fast starts weren't enough to hold off a tidal wave for the Phoenix softball team on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates led visiting Mazama early in both games of a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Colver Field before eventually falling 17-9 and 19-7. An 11-run fifth inning spelled the difference in the opener, wiping out a 9-2 Phoenix lead. PHS led 6-2 after three innings of the second game before Mazama scored 16 runs in the final three innings. Halie Bowman led the Phoenix offense, hitting a two-run homer in each game. Claire Mathewson tripled twice in the opener. Mazama totalled 33 hits in the two games. Phoenix (5-8 overall, 1-5 in the Skyline) returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Henley.

Pirate Lose: 3 - 5
An opportunity to bring home  a Skyline Conference win from Klamath Falls on Wednesday wasn’t quite in the cards for the Phoenix softball team. The Pirates dropped a 5-3 decision at Mazama. Phoenix totaled seven hits in the contest, including two by Halie Bowman. Claire Mathewson and Emma Truex pitched for Phoenix, which is 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The teams play again on Saturday when the Pirates host a doubleheader beginning at noon at Colver Field in Talent.
Pirates split pair with CCHS

Pirate Win: 16 - 6
After losing a close one in the opener, the Phoenix softball team took charge to earn a split of a doubleheader with Cascade Christian on Friday afternoon. The Pirates fell 4-3 the first game before rolling past the Challengers 16-6 in the second game at US Cellular Fields. Wet grounds at Colver Fields forced the contests to be moved. An eight-run first inning jump-started Phoenix in the nightcap. PHS scored in every inning and eventually brought the game to an end with three runs in the sixth inning to invoke the 10-run rule. Claire Mathewson and Katelyn Hanson shared the pitching duties in the win. Phoenix totaled 14 hits in the game with Makenna Page, Halie Bowman and Hanson collecting three each.  Mathewson pitched the first game, allowing just six hits in the contest. Brooke Kentner doubled for one of the three Pirate hits in the game. Phoenix returns to action Wednesday, visiting North Valley to open Skyline Conference play.

Pirate Win: 20 - 7
Offensively, the Phoenix softball team was in mid-season form on Saturday. The Pirates scored 33 runs and hammered out 30 hits in a season-opening split of single games in Sutherlin. PHS dropped a 14-13 decision in the opener to Sutherlin before rolling past Douglas 20-7. Sutherlin came up with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win a back-and-forth contest with PHS. Makenna Page collected four hits and Katelyn Hanson three in the opener for Phoenix. They both drove in runs in the top of the seventh to stake the Pirates to a 12-1-0 lead. Sutherlin responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game.  A 14-run third inning took care of things in the second game as the Pirates invoked the 10-run rule after five innings. Brooke Kentner totalled three hits while Tattum Truex added two. Emma Truex scattered nine hits to pick up the win. The Pirates return to action Wednesday, visiting Rogue River in a 4 pm game.
