A season of growth came to an end for the Phoenix girls soccer team on Thursday night. The Pirates played host Klamath Union to a scoreless first half before the Pelicans pulled away for a 3-0 Skyline Conference victory in Klamath Falls.  PHS, which broke a 75-match conference losing streak this season, finished with a marked of 3-10 overall and 1-9 in Skyline play. Megan Farley and Lilliana Mejia led the Pirates in the contest.

The Phoenix girls soccer team continues to show that it can compete in the Skyline Conference. While the Pirates didn't win Monday's Skyline Conference match at Mazama, they gave the host Vikings all they wanted in a 2-1 loss. Liliana Mejia scored on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute of the match, cutting the Mazama lead in half. The Pirates weren't able to come up a tying goal as they fell to 3-9 overall and 1-8 in the Skyline. Lupita Alegria anchored the team's defensive effort. PHS closes the season on Thursday, visiting Klamath Union in a 6:30 pm start in Klamath Falls.

Four seniors on the field and two who are injured made certain the Phoenix girls' soccer team left  no doubt about its effort in the final home game for the group at Colver Fields on Thursday afternoon. The Pirates dropped a 2-0 Skyline Conference match to visiting Henley. The PHS defense turned back Hornet threats throughout the match while the offense managed multiple shots on goal but wasn't able to convert. The senior group included Maegan Farley, Lili Mejia, Grace LaNier and Carina Rodriguez on the field as well as Emonie Snowton and Dani Escobedo, who are both injured. PHS is 3-8 overall and 1-7 in Skyline play. The Pirates return to action Monday, visiting Mazama.

North Valley flexed its muscle on Monday. The defending state 4A champions topped Phoenix 8-0 in a Skyline Conference match at Colver Fields. The host Pirates trailed 2-0 at halftime before the Knights pulled away for an 8-0 victory. Phoenix (1-6 in conference play) returns to action on Thursday, hosting Henley in a 4:30 pm start.

Regardless of the final score, the Phoenix girls’ soccer team felt very good about things after a Skyline Conference match against Hidden Valley. The Pirates gave third-ranked Hidden Valley all it wanted in a 3-1 loss in Murphy on Thursday. Carina Rodriguez scored an unassisted goal for PHS 10 minutes into the match and the Pirate defense held HV scoreless throughout the second half of the match. Phoenix (3-6 overall, 1-5 in conference play) will be at home on Monday, hosting North Valley at Colver Field starting at 4:30 pm.

Pirate Win: 2 - 1
The Phoenix girls’ soccer continues to knock down barriers during the 2017 season. After equaling last season’s victory total with a pair of non-conference wins in September, the Pirates took care of even bigger business on Tuesday afternoon, downing visiting Klamath Union 2-1 in a Skyline Conference game at Colver Fields. In addition to being the inaugural Skyline win of the season, the victory ended a league losing streak of 75 games, dating back to late in the 2009 season when PHS down Illinois Valley in a league contest. In between wins there were 73 losses and a pair of ties. Phoenix did all of its scoring in the first half. Lupita Alegria turned a penalty kick into a goal in the 20th minute before Alex Hernandez angled a shot past the KU goalie 10 minutes later. The visiting Pelicans scored earlier in the second half but were unable to find the net again. Phoenix improved to 1-4 in Skyline play and 3-5 overall. The Pirates return to action Thursday, visiting Hidden Valley in Murphy.

The Phoenix girls’ soccer team had its chances on Thursday afternoon. The Pirates outshot visiting Mazama throughout the match but ultimately came up scoreless in a 4-0 Skyline Conference loss at Colver Fields. PHS (0-4 in the Skyline, 2-5 overall) return to action Monday, hosting Klamath Union.

The search for a victory in Skyline Conference play continues for the Phoenix girls' soccer team. The Pirates put together another commendable effort on Monday night in Klamath Falls, but ultimately came up short in a 4-0 loss at Henley. PHS trailed 1-0 at halftime and had a goal disallowed in the second half (off an indirect kick). The host Hornets then added three  more goals to seal the victory. The Pirates are 0-3 in league play and 2-4 overall. They host Mazama on Thursday (4:30 pm kickoff) at Colver Fields.

Pirate Lose: 2 - 5
After two postponements due to air quality issues, the Phoenix girls' soccer team finally managed to get in a match at Sutherlin on Saturday. And while the Pirates dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision, there were a lot of positives in the contest. Maggie Carriillo and Alandra Ruvacalba both scored (Carrillo also had an assist). Several junior varsity players moved up to the varsity for the day and played well according to coach Stephanie Vandenbusch. The Pirates (2-3 overall) return to Skyline play on Monday at Henley.

North Valley showed why it is the defending state champions, downing visiting Phoenix 10-1 in a Skyline Conference match on Thursday in Merlin. The loss dropped the Pirates to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in league play. PHS returns to action on Saturday, visiting Sutherlin. The Pirates will return to conference play on Monday at Henley.

Eventually, the Phoenix girls' soccer team was going to give up a goal. After two straight shutouts to open the season, the Pirates held visiting Hidden Valley scoreless through the first half before the Mustangs took charge in a 4-0 Skyline Conference win at Colver Fields on Monday afternoon. PHS found itself on the defensive for most of the night and managed only one shot on goal. The Pirates (2-1 overall) return to action Thurdsay when they travel to North Valley.

The Phoenix girls' soccer team improved to 2-0, posting its second straight shutout in the process. The Pirates outshot visiting South Umpqua 28-4 on the way to a 5-0 win at Colver Fields on Monday afternoon. PHS led 3-0 at halftime and never looked back. Carina Rodriguez scored twice while Maggie Carillo had a goal and two assists in the win. Marcella Badillo totalled three saves in working the shutout in goal. Phoenix returns to action Saturday, visiting Sutherlin in a noon start.

Pirate Win: 4 - 0
A battle of the Pirates was all Phoenix on Thursday afternoon. After a pair of postponements due to poor air quality, PHS finally opened its girls' soccer season with a resounding 4-0 win at Marshfield. Phoenix got a pair of goals from Maggie Carrillo while Jackie Rodriguez and Carina Rodriguez both added a goal and Alex Hernandez an assist. Faith Moody and Marcella Badillo split time in goal, posting the shutout for the PHS, which returns to action Monday when it is scheduled to host South Umpqua.
